Information architecture (IA) is defined as the way content is grouped on a site and the system or method (navigation design) used to reach that content. It is a hidden art that most people don't usually notice unless it's poor and stops them from finding the information they seek.
ARCHESITE integrates a detailed information architecture strategy into each blueprint document for larger projects. Small sites can define the IA in a simple, text-based map of the site that clearly labels the global (major) areas and the local (subsection) areas to whatever level is necessary to accurately represent the site's content and functionality.
In whatever form it takes, identifying and ranking the importance of each element on a site is necessary because the most important information should be seen first followed by the second most important, third most important, etc. Without it, the cost of failure is enormous. |
